A transitional film at the end of his first decade of filmmaking, James Benning’s Grand Opera introduces a degree of storytelling to his previously more formalist devices. Benning calls the film his “first attempt at writing my own kind of history” and, in a sense, it also serves to write himself into history, acutely measuring his place as a Midwestern experimental filmmaker, then based in Oklahoma, in relationship to the avant-garde scene situated in New York. The film thus features homages to the prominent experimental cinema of the time, including a spoof of Wavelength, as well as cameos from Michael Snow, Hollis Frampton and Yvonne Rainer. Woven with these sequences are other characteristic Benning gambits – a compilation of every house he ever lived in, a preoccupation with the history of Pi, and the looming threat that a building will explode.

UNTITLED AZHAR USMAN PROJECT is a refreshingly honest and ferociously independent standup film by veteran (yet indie and underground) standup comic Azhar Usman, directed by his longtime collaborator, Paul Elia. The one-time co-creator of "Allah Made Me Funny-The Official Muslim Comedy Tour" now finds himself working in Hollywood, inside the proverbial 'Belly of the Beast,' writing for successful TV shows, and even joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But who cares? From thoughtful ruminations on the nature of life and existence itself, to deeply confessional and personal stories, Azhar takes a startling (yet hilarious) look at his own fears, insecurities, and privately held beliefs, while trying to make sense of the crazy world around us. UNTITLED AZHAR USMAN PROJECT is a tour-de-force of spiritual wisdom, philosophical examination, and raw standup comedy, illustrating why Dave Chappelle once remarked: "Azhar is untouchable, he's like a comedian from the future."

Forget EastEnders, as pioneers of working class chic the early Pulp videos epitomise Shoreditch living, from cramped rooms to charity shop glam; while the later videos, with bigger budgets, add to Pulp's classic kitsch values. The most inspired of the 15 on offer here has to be "The Bad Cover Version", which appears to assemble the cast of Stars in their Eyes. 　　Beyond the videos and live performances are selections of home movies. Included are the documentaries "Do You Remember the First Time", focusing on losing your virginity, and "This is Hardcore" which, unsurprisingly, centres on the merits of porn and freedom. "TV Madness" is a beautiful montage of crazy TV promotions that shows the price of fame is appearing on Going Live. "Home Movies" offers a look at the real lives of Pulp; "Sheffield Bands" offers a glimpse at Pulp before they were famous while "Catfield" is possibly be the most bizarre children's programme on the planet. Using inspired editing techniques and sceneography, it's clear this all comes from the minds of Jarvis and co, a band who simply refuse to conform to normal stereotypes, instead making up their own rules as they go along.
